Salon O Hair Salon in Northampton, MA

Looking for a stylist of natural black hair at this salon. Asking for a friend. I read this place had one stylist is gone. Has the issue been resolved since then?

I really loved Christian and I needed a haircut. He's definitely an extremely talented hair stylist and there's no denying his skill with natural hair. He did everything to make me comfortable, gave me amazing advice, and used a lot of high quality products. I really enjoyed my time with him and I'm going to use tips he gave me into the future. However, I took off one star because I told him I wanted to preserve the length of my hair and he cut off a LOT more than I wanted in the back. My hair looks like a rectangle from the side now since it doesn't have the back section to round it out. On one hand, I should have communicated what I wanted better, but on the other, it was a pretty dramatic change. Given the chance, I would probably give around 4.5 stars, since again, Christian is fantastic. There was just a miscommunication along the way and it ended up with some more visually dramatic results.

Today was my first visit to Salon O, and I left feeling like I had found my new hair home! I moved to the area about a year ago and have struggled to find a stylist who was comfortable working with my 3B/C African-American/Black hair. Christian was my stylist (not sure why another reviewer on here said he is no longer there), and he was AWESOME (kind, approachable, knowledgeable, creative...I could go on and on!!). And, I love what he did with my hair! It was such a relaxing experience with great conversation. This salon does what lots of others don't--it clearly caters to ALL people and hair types. I have so much respect for that. Everyone in there was really warm and open. I already have another appointment to return :)

Greetings I am only writing because there may be another black woman like myself looking desperately for someone who understands her hair and treats her like she's a human like the rest of the clientele here. I used to frequently visit Salon O, Christian was my stylist. He was very knowledgeable about the politics around black hair and how disheartening and frustrating it can be to not have anyone able to truly help your hair thrive when you have 4C texture. He studied he practiced he was amazing to my hair, but he's gone and the staff that are left do not have the same passion to give equity to all of their clientele. I was seen by June who I thought as another black woman I would be safe in her hands. After feeling through my hair she was shocked at the softness of my hair which is a common stereotype about black hair and that type of lack of awareness was exactly what I was hoping to avoid by having a black hair stylist. I came in for a Keratin Treatment, something I had done significant research on before I arrived at the salon. I was informed by June several invalid reasons why she wouldn't advise the treatment. 1) Keratin treatments weren't good for african american hair. This is false 2) You can't do Keratin treatments on color treated hair. This is also False. Do your research Keratin treatments are great for natural coily hair and to June and the rest of the Salon O staff my sincere hope is that you take your years worth of experience and combine it with new knowledge as to better serve your clientele also if you do not know how to do something just say you don't know how and then do something about it so that I can perhaps someday come back and bring you more clients as I brought 4 new clients to Christian.
