I am finicky about both my hair cut and color, and when moving back here from California I was nervous about looking for someone to do my hair. Kelly Matecki was recommended to me and while it is a drive for me from Lockport to Depew she is worth every mile. Her color skills rival and in many cases surpass the Beverly Hills salons where I had my hair done out in LA. Her cut is just exsctly what I want....i am more than happy to put myself in her capable hands every time I go in....and her vivacious personality just adds to the visit. In a nutshell my trips to Shades are always a pleasure...and I highly recommend Kelly M.

I had been going to Shades for the last couple of years. I had been sick of botch jobs or overpriced haircuts with inattentive service at other places I would go to once and not feel compelled to return to again. I always drove by Shades so I decided to give it a try. I called and just said I was looking for a stylist and was matched up with one. This stylist is moving to a new salon, so I am going with her there, but figured I could leave a general review for the salon. Overall it is a nice, clean, friendly place. It is more cozy and comfortable instead of modern and elegant. There are many stations and stylists so I think you would be able to come in for a cut as a walk-in pretty easily. There is not a ton of separation from the waiting area to the counter or the stylists stations so sometimes it was loud with the chatting and then the blow driers. The back is also not that big so the sinks were right by my stylists station or you might have someone sitting while their hair was processing. It didn't bother me too much, but sometimes it is nice to chat with your stylist without everyone hearing. Pretty basic offerings mainly with hair. They might do like a lip or eyebrow wax, but nothing much beyond that. I drove by though and saw they were promoting Body Weight Loss Wraps. They do have a Keurig machine with k-cups and a filtered water machine so you are welcome to make yourself a drink while you wait. They were usually playing country music which isn't my top pick, but it was nothing that bothered me. Plenty of magazines and even paperback books available to read. I think the owner did a "lend out" system with the books if someone wanted to keep reading. Parking wasn't an issue as it is in a small with a nail salon, small family restaurant, and scooter store. I usually called to make an appointment, and anyone who I chatted with was friendly and made sure to get all my information. I often saw kids in there and they were very good with them. If you need a place close by and don't need all the sparkle and pizazz of the higher end boutique salons, this is a good, quality place to pick.

This review is for Jen at Shades. Jen did my hair for my wedding, and she was absolutely FANTASTIC. In her consultation, she spent time going through options with me. The day of, she worked with the front of the hair until it was just right. Everyone complimented my hair as soft and natural, yet still up and styled. I have extremely thick, straight blonde hair, and Jen's updo lasted from 11:30am until 12midnight in intense humidity and a shower!
