Personal recommendations from friends or colleagues can also be a great way to find a salon. It might be worthwhile to visit a few salons or have consultations to gauge comfort and service.

Weekends, especially Saturday mornings and afternoons, are often peak times for many hair salons. Additionally, weekday evenings can be busier due to clients visiting post-work. It's always a smart move to book in advance, but if you prefer a quieter environment, you can ask Availeth Spa Salon about their less hectic hours.
After I arrived at the salon and spoke with Leilah, she seemed confident that she could do a Black woman's hair. I went to have my gray hair dyed, and I have NO relaxer. I asked her if she's had Black clients. She said yes. I gave her a chance, because I had 1 white female & 1 white male (at another salon) who did my hair well in the past.
When I returned to her chair after the shampoo & rinse out conditioner, she applied something to my hair overall, then immediately picked up a round brush and proceeded to start blow drying. I was alarmed and said, "Aren't you going to section off my hair?" She said, "I do it as I go." I watched her struggle & told her that I do my own hair. I only go to a salon for a trim and color. I repeatedly told her that she needed to section off my hair, because she would be drying hair that she's not working on. She kept struggling. She tried 2 or 3 sections then went to get a paddle brush. I told her that she can't brush wet, natural hair. I told her that she needed a wide tooth comb. She kept trying to do it her way. Finally she told me, "I don't need to section off your hair. I can do it to make you feel comfortable but I can get it done without it." She continued to struggle with my ends & roots. I was nervous the entire time. The end product looked barely average & was puffy at the roots. I'm sure that I've got some new split ends with her repeatedly drying & brushing tangled, wet hair at the same time.
She truly lacks knowledge about NATURAL African American hair & lacks the tools. I really considered getting up to finish my hair at home. I regret not doing so. I straighten my ends and roots much better and without using high heat or tension from a brush.
To do African American hair that's natural, several things are needed: 1) knowledge, 2) products made for natural African American hair, 3) proper technique- not a one-size fits all, 4) the right tools, 5) experience, and 6) patience.
That was my first & last time with Leilah Gaines. I left no monetary tip, because she ignored my repeated tips. Learn to listen to your customer.
