I had a haircut appt with Shannon Doukala at the Bay Street location about two weeks ago. I had just taken the NY bar exam in late Feb., I was still very tense when I came to the salon, and I took some time to calm down before I wrote this. I also read all the 1-star reviews on Yelp and Google and the best I can gather about what happened here is that the salon doesn't do well with older clients, professional clients, and possibly Indian women. I'm in my 40s and probably look a few years younger, I'm a lawyer, and I'm of Indian origin. I moved to NJ from the Midwest a few years go and one of the things I've had to get used to in NJ is that service-providers feel free to passive-aggressively decline customers. I think Shannon decided to give me a bad experience. She offered me water or tea and then brought the water with a hair on it. Shannon spent very little time with me. An assistant washed my hair and styled it. I grew increasingly frustrated and looked up at the camera. Shannon then returned and did the dry cut of my curly hair. The conversation was oddly stilted. Shannon told me that three stylists had recently quit and she looked forward to making a lot of money. When she told me that three stylists had recently quit, I heard someone laughing. I tried to make conversation with Shannon as she seemed to be enjoying a Britney Spears song; I asked if she'd read Britney's recent book. Shannon said that she didn't read books and later suggested that "inconspicuous" was a big word. When I got home, I realized that neither the assistant nor Shannon had done the wet cut of the ends. When I called the salon and requested the wet cut, I got pushback as if somehow I didn't know what a haircut was. The following day, I went to the second location, an hour out of my way. Shannon again insisted that she'd cut my hair and I repeated again that I wanted the ends trimmed. Shannon washed my hair, got my back wet, and worked in sullen silence. She said that she was under a lot of pressure but no one treated her like she was under so much pressure that she maybe didn't belong at work. After the haircut, Shannon apologized for not doing the wet cut. As I was leaving, I asked the person at the counter about the cameras. She said that they were there for insurance purposes but also confirmed that she had access to the video on her phone. Shannon did the complete curly cut after considerable prodding but I will not be returning. Maybe that was her intention. I sent this entire review to the salon and got no response. This is a one-star review because I had to repeatedly demand the full service and because the use of the cameras by the stylists is super weird. The average person knows they're often on camera for loss prevention and insurance purposes but the stylists using the cameras introduces another dynamic that's largely unnecessary.

This review is just for the hair consultation. I signed up as part of an event. The new location is so nice!! They really did a great job decorating - if you like things vintage and pink, this is the spot for you. I loved how spacious this location is!! I had a great time talking to the business manager and the hairstylist. Both were so welcoming. It feels like a place that welcomes everyone's individuality with no judgment - I really really liked that.

Not much to say. 2 hours. $100. And a kid in tears. I would have appreciated communication if mens cuts weren't her Jam. I feel awful for my kid.

Nice spot, very comfortable environment and salon experience overall. I didn't have anything major done, just a trim, but my stylist, Amanda, was very attentive and friendly.

the salon has a 48 hour cancellation policy and takes credit card details at booking. I live four hours away and made an appointment to coincide with a visit to my son who lives in jersey city. unfortunately thirty hours before scheduled app my son called to let me know he had Covid so understandably we canceled visit. I immediately called the salon to cancel but was told I would automatically be charged 50 %, which is a fairly considerable amount. even if I rescheduled I would still be charged an additional 50%. I understand this is the policy but I feel they could be a little flexible in these current times.
