Nail & Hair Care Spa in Ellicott City, MD

I've been going here for a couple of years now (usually dip powder) and have never had a bad experience. The technicians are kind, efficient, and professional. The space is large and clean and usually pretty busy with regulars coming back. Kim is great- I highly recommend!

Very conveyor belt style experience at this nail spa. We arrived on time for our appointment; we had made it clear at the time of scheduling that my mom and I wanted pedicures done at the same time. After arrival, they kept telling us that it would be a 10 min wait, but it actually took close to an hour for them to start our service. They took both of us back to the chairs, but I sat waiting for an additional 15 min for my pedicurist to arrive while they started my mom's service. We had to remind them that we wanted the pedicures done simultaneously. Someone finally came over to help me, but she seemed stressed and hassled. It was a very business-like experience, not at all soothing or relaxing. At times the handling was too rough and I had to ask the pedicurist to be more gentle. The "massage" couldn't even be called a massage - she just slapped some cream on my legs and basically let it sit for a few minutes. My mom's water was boiling hot at first, then too cold - she asked them to adjust it, but the pedicurist seemed annoyed and seemed to be complaining to her colleague. It cost over $82 dollars for pedicures for two people - at the end of the day it didn't feel worth it. Nothing about the experience felt good. I can put color on my nails at home, I don't need to waste 2 hours of my limited time off going to a salon where they seem to just want to get the job done and move on to the next person as efficiently as possible.

First time here, got paired with Samantha/Sam. She did a mani pedi for me and it turned out beautiful. It was exactly as I asked. Sam was fun to talk to, and she recommended a hairstylist for me. I'll be coming back next week for a hair appointment with Mahmut.

I was visiting my sister from the DC area, and we decided to go for a post-thanksgiving sister spa day (mani/pedi) at Nail & Hair Care Spa before I headed home. We scheduled appointments for 2pm (on 11/28) and made sure to arrive on time. When we arrived, the reception and check in process were ok. The issue started when I told my nail technician (Kim) that I wanted to do a dipping color instead of a gel manicure. I showed her the color I wanted, and she assured me they had it and thrust 3 color rings in my hand and ushered me into the pedicure chair. While I was in the chair, I realized that the color I wanted was not in the selection she gave me. She brushed it off and said it was. Then I asked her to show me just in case I missed it. Ladies... they did not have the color. Strike 1. Ok, fine. No problem. I went to select another one. This lady started to argue with me that I had acrylic on and started to file/scrape the color off into the pedicure water. I did not have acrylic. Again, I let it go. Strike 2. The final straw was when the woman proceeded to wrap my fingers in acetone and insert my hands into used, soiled, and dirty gloves! How?! So, I asked her if the gloves were used. She confirmed that they were indeed used and that was their process. Specifically, that they used disposable gloves twice. After all the reviews on Google about cleanliness, I do not believe that this is a standard practice. I informed her that in my over 20 years of getting my nails done, that it was unheard of to insert a customer's hands into soiled gloves and that it was particularly unsanitary in the middle of an active pandemic. I then asked her what the process for determining who got the new gloves and who by comparison got the used gloves. She dismissed me and put new gloves on. No apology, no explanation. I felt so disgusted, I asked her to stop my pedicure and to find another person. She said no one else was available, so I informed her that I would wait. Shortly after, a guy (I did not get his name) came over to start my pedicure and asked me why I was requesting another person. I explained that I requested someone else because Kim was reusing the disposable glove by putting my hand in them. Visibly wet and dirty gloves that someone else had used. He started laughing (Strike 4). At that point we asked to leave. The lady helping my sister with her pedicure had already removed her toenail polish and asked my sister to pay $20 for the work she had done. Understanding that this woman was trying to do her job, my sister paid. However, we asked to speak to the manager because it really felt odd that in a spa in a nice neighborhood that we were treated like second class citizens and the Google reviews raved about how clean this place was. The manager informed the receptionist that she was too busy to come speak with me! She begrudgingly did, and justified Kim's actions as her using her discretion. No apology or acknowledgment that the practice was unsanitary. She then realized that we did not want any freebie and had actually paid, she tried to hurriedly give us cash in the amount that we paid. Side eye. Sorry not sorry, sister, we did not come here for your money or discounts. I told her she could give the cash to the technician for her work. My assessment: Beware. This place is horrid. They have a tiered and selective method of customer service. From the reviews on Google about cleanliness, I doubt that they put soiled and used gloves on all their customers. I would be interested in how they determine who gets soiled and used materials. I doubt that they can provide transparency into that process, therefore I will take a guess. They do not respect women of color and really believe that we don't belong there. They don't want us to spend our money here and would rather focus on another demographic. That is unacceptable. Shame on Nail & Hair Care Spa. Luckily, we found another nail place that treated us like we were complete human beings not a fraction of. Sister spa day was saved.
