STEP BONE CUT Brooklyn (hair salon) in Brooklyn, NY

We travel to NY from Dallas approximately 3-4 times per year...Last week, we stayed in Brooklyn. While walking, we discovered Step Bone Cut salon...I was fortunate to have had Kotaro style my hair. He gave one of the best shampoos that I have ever had. He did a marvelous job in styling my hair. He is a true professional. I will certainly revisit this salon each time that I am in NY and I will ask for Kotaro. Sandy Skiles

I had a great experience cutting my hair with the owner Sayuri, back in December 2018. I was open to something different and asked her to design a haircut for me. She drew the design on a piece of paper to get my approval before cutting it. I appreciated the visual so I had a sense of what to expect. It was a drastic change for me so it took some time getting used to it. But I got what I wanted, which was something bold and outside of my comfort zone. I received so many compliments from friends and strangers! Even those with more conventional taste that I thought wouldn't appreciate the cut but they all thought it was edgy and cool. Sayuri is a visionary!

So I'm the kind of girl that likes to DIY hair color--I've never gotten my hair dyed professionally before. I knew bleaching was a little more complex than a typical dye job so I decided to bite the bullet and get it done at the salon. Every worry I had about bleaching hair was proven wrong. My stylist Koutaro assured me that he will be careful not to damage my hair and he was right! Even right after the bleaching process my hair didn't feel too different from my natural hair texture. They put on this conditioning mist before bleaching (see photo) , maybe that was the trick. Koutaro was quick, charming, and literally smiling throughout the whole, double bleach & toning process. He was receptive to feedback (ie I wanted the bleach to be a little closer to the roots) and answered all of my questions thoroughly. Recommending all my friends to step bone cut! Love this place.

I had a really bad experience at this place. I was there for a free consolation with the creator of the step bone cut at first and I was about to leave because I found the price of 210 dollars too expensive (for cut and perm). When I was leaving, she persuaded me to stay with promising me how great my hair would look if she give it a try. I haven't done anything to my hair for months so I stayed. But the experience was terrible. The technique she was using really hurts (it literally felt like she is pulling my hair away from my head, instantly). During the shampoo, she didn't even use hair conditioner or anything, and she was about to let me walk out of there without getting my hair dried until I told her to please dry my hair. After the visit, I almost cried ( sorry for being dramatic but it did look that bad) over my hair. My hair looked nothing like she promised and looked really bad, also my hair is now super dry and looks like dead weed.

This is my first Yelp review, which I'm writing to say this salons technique will not be for every type of hair - wish I'd just been told this. I popped in as a curious walk-in (everyone was very lovely hence the 3 stars) but I wanted a classic bob and I stated the one thing my hair cannot be is razored/chopped into as it splits, breaks and generally looks chewed when that is done. I was assured that would not happen as its a 'special' technique used etc. the upshot is I cannot just wash and leave my (bobbed) hair, its half the thickness, static, very uneven and I mostly have to tie it back. Luckily grows fast!
