SAB Hair Studio in Bloomfield, NJ

Nine months pregnant and looking for a salon that hopefully had last minute open availability. This salon reached out to me that a spot was open on May 21st but they needed a virtual consultation first. Communication was slow as it was via email but the 21st was a week away so there was still time. I had the super quick "virtual consultation" (paid $25.00 for it). Then I was told that the May 21st slot was taken. I requested my $25.00 back and surprise - no response. Another Black owned business that takes advantage of other Black customers. This was really poor business practice guys. If the May 21st appointment wasn't available then say it. Instead it feels that you're hard up for $25.00.

This review is not based on hair style itself but leading up to appt with salon. I had made an appt with owner back in June, confirmed all the details, pricing and even provided a picture of what I wanted. When reaching out to confirm in Sept a week before, was initially told my appt wasn't there (after paying a $50 deposit) then told that it suddenly was on a new system with the owner changing the time of my initial appt without asking if it worked for me. Moreover, although I confirmed with her on the phone the details (Waist length at a particular price point) again on the phone the week before, when I arrived at the salon, there ensued a back and forth regarding pricing with the owner denying that the price on my clearly displayed email receipt was ever the pricing. She went as far as to call a colleague to confirm, which I'm not sure made any sense, seeing as how she had told me she planned to honor the original price when we spoke the week before. Moreover when I saw the ombré hair she produced for my box braids, it was clear that she had either 1 gotten the hair last minute and perhaps couldn't find the ombré in time or 2 never planned to get the ombré (maybe to pricey?) because it was clearly blonde from root to tip (blonde strands mixed in at the top and pure frosty blonde on bottom) vs the true ombré 1b to blonde I had sent her a pic of months before. Overall a very disappointing lead up which made me feel not confident in proceeding with the appt after such a bad experience leading up to it. I would not recommend based off of my own experience.

I am someone who is extremely particular about who does my hair. I come to a salon, after weeks of research, bringing photos, having an idea about how much hair I want in the braids, what type of hair I want, what the length should be and even how heavy it should feel. So I was incredibly happy when I had a great appointment with Stacey. She executed what I wanted to perfection. I had a wash, blow dry, and knotless small braids. The end result is so great and I will be returning again in 2-3 months. If you want to be in good hands, come here! Stacey took a photo of the end result so hopefully she adds it here!!

Venue I am so glad i looked on Yelp and found SAB hair studio. :-) Recently moved back to NJ after living in NY for seven years, so I virtually had no hair salon connections. SAB is in a great location and both Shelly and Stacy abide by COVID-19 protocol (wearing masks and sanitizing in between customers). Shelly was on time, professional and responsive to my emails. She doesn't braid too tight but I would imagine if it was tight, she would easily adjust if someone mentioned it. In addition to my braids, she also applied a few adornments afterwards (beads, string, clasps - I purchased) While I was there, another woman was under the dryer for a rod set, which looked beautiful when it was finished.

I am loving my new hairstyle ‍. Shelly was fast, efficient, and professional. She makes sure to treat my hair with care, and I'm natural. She was gentle with my hair. The braids aren't tight at all. She did a fabulous job!
