What a wonderful experience this was!! The salon itself is gorgeous and very clean. The women that worked there were all so friendly and the conversation was lively and fun.  I can't say enough good about my about my stylist Nikki!  She gave me the best haircut, considering I have curly hair, in my life.. I am so grateful to have found her in this salon.. Even though I live in Vancouver and it's a 1/2 an hour away, it will be my go to from now on . Would give more than 5 stars if I could!

Do yourself the biggest favor and DO NOT sit in Darlene's chair. Unless you want to be abused and leave with extremely overprocessed and breaking hair. She lives up to her reputation of being madly inappropriate. I tried overlooking it because she was cordial with me in the past. At her age, psychological and spiritual state, it would be a gamble to assume she'll remain cordial to you while providing the service you expect and deserve. If she's having a bad day or if her "back and ankles are hurting" she will push your appt back 2 hours... even when you make your appt 7 weeks in advance, and insult your hair type and medical issue. After you request a texturizer, she'll APPLY AND OVER PROCESS YOUR HAIR WITH A PERM ON YOUR VIRGIN HAIR AND CALL IT A TEXTURIZER, will grab and tug at your hair as if it insulted her, will yell and talk down to you, wet your face during shampoos- yet accuse YOU of slobbering up your brand new mask, will aggressively pull your head centimeters toward her huge breasts while talking down to you... cut the appt with your head half done because she had another client AND tell you to come back 4 hours later to finish. All done at the most obnoxious high volume level. After finishing your own service, she is nervy enough to talk down to you as she tells you the cost of her less-than- paying-worthy service AFTER abusing you. She will actually push for and accept payment, attempting to bully you until you AGGRESSIVELY check her into her place. Then, she'll suddenly recall her behavior and half apologize by returning the money she was so adamant on receiving just hours prior. If you request for her to compensate for the years of left over damage, she will refuse. Darlene is very unstable. She has a problem with lying, ego, pride, admitting when she's wrong and standing up to her intentional "mistakes". All these are obvious signs and traits of a disturbed individual who needs love, spiritual and psychological attention. She's been doing hair longer than many of us have been alive. She knows better. Do you really want someone lacking so much putting their toxic energy into your head?

The owner, Ms Joy and I have spoken. Darlene thinks that since she's a independent contractor, she won't pay the consequences for her actions, however... her reputation will, as she is learning today. Her behavior was excused in the past by others but today is a new day, Darlene. I understand Portland's standards for just about everything is much lower than other areas, which is why Darlene's behavior has been ignored until now. Ms Joy apologized for my experience. This is no reflection on Ms Joy personally, just her unfortunate burden of employing Darlene, as she chose to take her on at Jayah Rose. Let's see how long it takes for Darlene to have another tantrum and burn another professional bridge like her cousin.

I took the liberty of checking Darlene via text... and saved her responses admitting to her behavior. She would not pay to repair the years worth of her intentional damage done to my hair, which is why this complaint has been made public for you current/ potential clients and tea sippers. If you really want the "tea" , you can view it on on the IG page @sitdownsomewheredarlene . I took screen shots of our texts with her admitting to her disgusting behavior. Please take the time to read them... it will save you much trauma, money, fucked up hair and the worst experience with a bitter and scorned golden girl.

Darlene, I was hoping you really learned from your embarrassing behavior as I said in our texts, but I also knew you would pull this stunt after, so obviously not. It may be time to throw in the towel and retire, hun. Focus on your health- healing physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually and psychologically. While having several seats in your time-out, be a better example for the other black "professional" women learning your toxic traits. There's too many like you in Portland sadly. Let's do better, black women.

Nikky saved my hair after over a year without haircuts during the pandemic. She worked some serious magic and it came out even better than I could have imagined. Cannot recommend this salon enough!

I love this salon, however I used a new stylist named Jeleah recently who was so rude and nasty to me the whole appointment. I came in to the salon excited to spend the day amongst my fellow Black women, and left in tears because I was treated like a burden the whole appointment because I picked up the wrong hair by mistake. I can admit when I'm wrong, however I didn't think making this mistake would make the stylist treat me like I was a POS. I apologized for the mix up, offered to pay upfront if this didn't work/we needed to reschedule and took full responsibility for not getting the right product.

At the beginning I was told that she could make what I brought work, only after an hour or so being told it wasn't going to work and the stylist sent me out to the hair store to get what she needed. This would have been nice to know before she started so I didn't have to go out with a half done head of hair, but no big deal.

EXCEPT she proceeds to harass me the whole time I am out saying I was taking too long (the store had a long line) and says she's charging me extra for wasting her time, when she literally disappeared for 25 minutes on her phone in the middle of my appointment before I went to the store. I however said the fee was fine though because I know she had another appointment later. Again trying to be accommodating because I know it was my fault I picked up the wrong hair and wanting to smooth things cover.

I finally get back and she makes me sit outside for 10 minutes (even though she read my message saying I was back) before coming to the door to let me in to finish my appointment which appeared to just be out of spite with the way she passive aggressively let me back in and still did not say one word to me upon return. At this point there was no denying she absolutely did not want me there. I asked her if she wanted to just stop doing my hair because the vibes were off and I didn't want any negativity going into my hair. She flatly said no and she was almost done, but still continued to be rude to me the rest of the appointment.

It was an awful experience. The whole time she acted pissed I had even booked. I definitely was not asking to have my a** kissed, but I expected some professionalism and tact which I did not get. I've never had a stylist who acted nasty like this before so I was just shocked. At the end of the appointment I just wanted to get out of there ASAP because she clearly didn't want me there.

We finally finished and I can tell she was just trying to get me out ASPAP too, because one of my locs in the front of my head literally is not secured and I'm going to have to fix that on my own. Based on this experience I wouldn't say avoid this salon all together, but make sure you find the right stylist.

I personally will be pursuing other salons because I would feel uncomfortable seeing this person, but there are some great people here with experience and professionalism. I got my hair done by Nadege prior and she was amazing. Just not this individual.

Update: I added her name because most of the locs unraveled within a week of getting my hair done with me taking very good care of them. They also were not sized correctly. I had to fix them myself. You can not treat people like this and I hope for the good of your reputation, you change your attitude and treat all customers how you would want to be treated.
