Fama's Hair Braid in Southaven, MS

Been rocking with Fama for years now.... she always does me right. (Sidebar: I still have edges.) Check her out she'll get you in and out in no time. I was out in 2.5 hrs tops . If she's busy she'll call in more braiders and you won't regret it . No appointment necessary. These girls can really BRAID . Her prices vary but she's always reasonable . Im giving her 4 stars because if you're not attentive she'll switch the prices on you and try to charge you more than what she originally quoted. do not attempt to get your hair done here unless you really dont care about how you are treated, how your hair turns out or the pain that lasts a week or more just for a style that you dont even like!!!!!!!

IF and I MEEEEANNN IFFFFFF you're in a SERIOUS pinch and can NOT for the love of God find another salon then this shop will do.

Now I WILL say In all fairness this IS an African Braid shop so they CAN do basic braiding...
However that is really about ALL you're gonna get.
If you're looking for an awesome experience with creative flair involved where you actually look forward to not only getting your hair done but as well as the interaction with your stylist then SKIP Fama altogether and let your lil cousin do your braids.

When I walked into Fama I found that these ladies are all from the Mother land which I actually think is great. However the delight of Possibly learning more about Africa is QUICKLY faded as these stylists are not interested in speaking to you.
Not really... as 99.5% of the time they use primarily their own language and ONLY communicate with themselves as opposed to engaging their patrons.

I was greeted with PURE Church mouse  silence even though I heard Many voices ‍‍‍as I approached the front door. After the ladies resumed speaking among themselves..a few moments later I got a semi-lukewarm acknowledgement as an unidentified stylist confirmed my style.
NO ONE introduced themselves (even though others would later come to assist in my style)
I observed the decor to be like something from Good Times with that high tone, low grade, Dollar General Yellow Tag clearance pack of peel and stick tile they have on the floor.
There's a TV at the front of the room playing videos also in another language.  Which again is very cool BUT because you have no subtitles or HUMANS with which to interact or translate for you that's a fleeting delight also.
They have work 2 stations, 3 salon chairs and some type of coffee-or magazine/butt rest in the middle of the room.
Oh Yeah And its HOT as there is only ONE small 5000 btu window unit ac working very hard to cool off at least the 4-5 stylistspresent PLUS the 3
customers that were there.
After about 50 minutes  of my arrival I was finally advised to have a seat where again I was STILL NEVER introduced OR asked my own name.‍
I was not consulted about How I'd like my particular style. She began to just braid my track never disclosing what she was doing or what she was doing it with. Thank The LORD I knew what questions to ask.

About half way thru my style one of the stylists knocked over a make shift braid set up another stylist was using, repeatedly. These things ended up on the floor a MINIMUM of THREE times.  After ALL of the commotion that caused Not one piece of hair was discarded neither were any of the utensils cleaned or sanitized.
Who does THAT? ‍
I thought Oh my Goodness that's a state board violation on soooo MANY levels!
I was never so relieved to have NOT been in at that stylist's chair.
But Later I got to thinking my stylist NEVER excused herself to even wash her hands before attempting my style either.
At any rate my hair was finished And I was happy to have gotten it done.
Now alllll of a SUDDEN EVERY LAST one OF THE LADIES are jumpin at the chance to speak to me wanting to know If I like my hair .
And JUST as quick my price was higher than originally agreed upon.
I paid it, kept my tip and LEFT.
Shortly after I left my husband took a picture of my hair from the back.
I saw that my hair was NOT arranged as I had advised I wanted it.  Waaaaaay toooooo much hair was used and the colors were just done irresponsibly with ZERO REGARD to how I indicated I had wanted my style, out of order.
To make matters Worse a few days later my braided track had come undone because another additional yet AGAIN unidentified stylist crammed at LEAST 5 packs of hair in the BACK of my hair. I had headaches ‍for DAYS until I ended up cutting quite a bit of it off just to try and salvage this mess for which I totally over paid.
I KNEW better than to go back and ask for a redo. I really just didn't prefer to ever go back into that semi clean HOT ‍non inviting environment and neither did I trust that it would be corrected.
I salvaged my style as best I could and made do with a pair of good scissors and made it my BUSINESS to find another salon where I'd be engaged and appreciated.

So once again these stylists can do basic braiding.
But pleasing YOU and EARNING your Repeat business is NOT their priority. Seems to me they KNOW you ain't coming back no time soon so they're happy to gouge you that first time.

And lastly UNLESS all the shops have closed for the next THREE days IN ROW and ALL your lil cousins are unavailable go to Fama OTHERWISE Keep your MONEY deeeep in your pocket go and buy a wig until you can find a stylists that CARES to treat you RIGHT.
Fama is NOT what you want.
