Zig Zag Salon in Austin, TX

I'm updating because Frieda the owner called and offered to schedule an appointment. Again, the folks here are always fun and I've seen them work miracles while I was getting my hair done.

Got a new cut from Andrea - cut off maybe 8 inches - and LOVE it. The salon is always clean and friendly and the stylists are so talented. Yes, yes!

I recently had a second appointment with Renee. I'm not good at explaining what I want in color so I provide a picture for color - this time a dark dark not quite black brown base and not-to-bright-blonde ombre. I described the long inverted bob cut that I like, asked for little taken off, long layers, and a clean up of my bangs that I am trying to grow out.. My color ended up looking very different than the picture I provided.. I can admit that I may not have been clear or confident enough in my request but my primary complaint is the red tenting in my base coat.. I don't know why this happened.. Others have commented on it too now. She asked me to remind her to get my bangs.. There was no comparing/measuring length on each side, and they ended up clearly uneven. The cut fell very blunt - all at the same length - choppy - so that especially when straightened it looks like someone hacked off all at the same length, not enough blending/long layers. I was sure to explain my routine, including straightening often, because I wanted to avoid this outcome. A prior experience with Renee: Renee's color met my expectations this time and the cut was better but I was surprised to not have a chance to preview the haircut at that appointment - I wasn't consulted on the cut once finished and I wasn't consulted on styling but she began to curl and style my hair without letting me see the cut and provide feedback and without asking me if or how I would like it styled. Is it common for stylists to sometimes make like... commission.. based on the percentage of sales? Idk.. After a second less than experience and after correcting my cut last night for $12 and hearing feedback from that stylist I am sure my complaints are valid. I paid $190 for this medium length balayage/full color and cut at ZigZag. Next time I will just get a $12 cut from stylist that I can trust, and do high end box color because of these experiences. I can't afford to treat myself to a salon day that doesn't leave me 100% satisfied.

I've gone to Zig Zag Salon for over 15 years now for amazing cuts, styles and color. All of the stylists are hair geniuses! I have known Freida, the owner, since she was an intern and have recommended her and her crew to dozens of people over the years! Freida is the most amazing colorist. I get compliments from complete strangers all the time. Even my boys have had their hair cut here and loved their cool little styles! The prices are reasonable especially when the service and company of the stylists can't be beat. No matter what kind of day I've had...if it ends at Zig Zag...life is good! This salon is truly an Austin gem. Cool, casual vibe with fabulous stylists that listen and deliver. Use pinterest to show them what you want or check out their pinterest examples on their website. Avoid the stuffy, snotty, overpriced salons and go to Zig Zag. You won't be sorry, and you'll return again and again like I have.

If you want Fun, Funky, Beautiful, crazy, amazing, stylish hair then Zig Zag is the place to be. I wanted to treat myself to something new and colorful so of course like you are doing now I went to YELP to see who was good at Pinterest style mermaid/ unicorn hair. Drea from Zig Zag Salon popped up so I gave her a call and was sitting in her chair two days later. I went in with nice normal blonde hair with highlights and 5 hours later I walked out with AMAZING mother of pearl hair just like the Pinterest picture I had shown her. I couldn't believe how amazing it looked! She had to Bleach my hair twice and put in 7 different colors of hair dye to make it happen and shockingly my hair isn't completely fried! I wanted to wait awhile to do this review to see if the color would actually stay in or not. I just made my appointment for a touchup on some of the colors "pinks don't like to stick around long" but all the blues, purples and greens are still hanging in there pretty strong! My first appointment was 2/14/17 and today is 3/9/17 This is such a cute little family owned and run Salon. Price is on point too! I was amazed at what I was charged for 5 hours of work. Some places charge a lot for time even if you are just sitting and processing but Drea was super fair and even generous with her time, products and what she charged me. Cheers to you Drea, you rock!
