Today was my first visit to Zelda's. The salon is hidden in an office complex in a residential neighborhood. The only way they can be as busy as they were is word of mouth.
Zelda highlighted and cut my hair. She is delightful and talented. Everybody in the salon - all the employees and customers were so friendly. It was like being at a family gathering.
So much promise. Great people, clean shop, very professional stylists and literally half the price than other places in the area and in Philly. 5 stars!
The first time I went I had a short consultation with my stylist. It was a mini therapy session about what I like, don't like what I'd like to change. It was really great to know she wasn't interested in touching my head until she had the full story. My hair was done well and lasted for a decent amount of time-- definitely not the longest or best but for less than $50 it was REALLY amazing.
I take away half a star because the second time I went my hair was done quickly and many of my locs weren't clipped properly-- meaning that when they dried they had completely unraveled. She must have seen that when she removed the clips but she didn't mention it and I didn't realize until I got home. No bueno
I take away another half a star because the shampoo girl, bless her dear heart, uses her nails and sometimes a comb to scratch the living hell out of your scalp before and during the wash. Not only is it insanely painful, I'm pretty sure it's dangerous and a bad idea all around. I recall that being useful for women with perms who need to scratch big nasty scabs (from chemical burn) out of their scalps but as someone with locs down my back I'm not sure why that would be part of the procedure.
I've seen really great work being done on non-locked natural hair and all the stylist have the cutest, funkiest hairstyles
