I called the salon a few days ahead of time to ask about pricing, and was told by an employee that I had to make an appointment before coming in. I proceeded to make my appointment for two days later at 11:00. Day of my appointment I walked into the salon at 11:00. I was a little bit confused, because it is no longer called "Salon by Kim," but rather it is now named "T HA Beauty Salon." After I picked out my polish color, I sat with my feet in tepid water for 25 minutes while the staff were busy doing other customers nails. I understand that running behind happens, no one is perfect, but when someone makes an appointment for a specific time (bc you tell them they have to!) that should be kept in mind. The staff were nice enough, they offered me water while I was waiting. The owner seems very friendly, but other staff were pretty silent the entire time. It seems that they have a pretty loyal base of customers, and that they know them by name which is nice, I suppose. The facility seemed clean, however I did not happen to see a certificate from the health inspector, like I usually do in other nail salons. The pedicure itself was okay! It was pretty similar to any other pedicure, with the addition of rubbing my legs with warm stones (which was quite nice!). I'm not sure that warrants the $38 pedicure price tag though. Overall, my experience was 'meh', my toes look nice, but the wait was a bit too long and pedicure was a bit pricey.
Tony and Kim are great! They always use high quality products and refuse to give anything but the best. Appointments are recommended, they do take some walk-ins but keep a small, dedicated staff in order to maintain consistency and quality. My nails always look great and last. If you are skeptical, go in and ask Tony to tell you about what he uses and why. Beautiful salon, clean and accommodating. Prices are right on par for the quality of service given. This is not your run of the mill nail salon. If you are looking for the cheapest service and don't care about quality, it's not for you. It's like getting your hair done at a high end New York salon vs. the strip mall cuttery.
Salon by Kim is amazing! I will never go anywhere else to get my nails done. Everyone in the salon is very friendly and it just has a positive atmosphere all around. They use top of the line products, and the polish stays for quite a while. My toe nail polish stayed on for more than 2 weeks without a single chip. I recommend for all of my friends to go here. In addition, Kim does amazing eyebrow waxing, and I will only go to her from now on to get my eyebrows done. I love how she shapes them and the wax they use is very gentle. PS. Don't listen to the 2 star review, all the workers have licenses that are displayed, and in addition, there is a very even balance of men to women working in the salon. Just from reading it and experiencing Salon by Kim for myself, I can tell someone just wanted to hurt their business.
For starters, don't let the website deceive you -- this is a basic, unlicensed strip mall TYPE nail salon, albeit cleaner and nicer than most. The dead give-away is the absence of a salon license (required by law in PA) or any individual nail technician/cosmetology licenses anywhere in the salon. Employees are for the most part young Asian women with poor English skills, which makes communication difficult. For example -- I asked the woman performing my manicure just to shape my nails, as they were already quite short; for some unexplicable reason she clipped two of them off below the ends of my fingers, right at the quick (OUCH!) before filing the rest. Also, despite the fact that they take appointments, this is a walk-in, first come first served operation. This became clear during my visit when I noticed no receptionist; the cordless phone was answered by the owner as he worked on customers, never writing anything down or going anywhere near the desk. The young woman to whom I was directed had no idea what services I'd requested, which should not have been the case if my appointment had been recorded as at a legitimate salon or spa. The manicure and pedicure were average. No blood was shed and I didn't have to do too much reshaping of my nails after I left (good points), but the polish job is of the same quality (uneven and sloppy) as if I'd done it myself. UPDATE to add -- the polish started chipping and peeling on my fingers the following day and was a total disaster in 48 hrs. Toenails lasted a little longer but I still had a huge chip on my big toe less than a week later, and this during a week when it was too cold for sandals. Plus points: the cost was reasonable, the place is immaculate and they do use good products and a new set of tools on each customer (from a sealed pouch, so presumably sterilized between customers). The owner is very personable as described, and there seem to be a good number of long term loyal regulars. However, I won't be among them, this will be my first and last visit.
