SAS Studio & Salon in Winchester, VA

I booked my wedding hair and makeup trial here and was willing to give them a shot despite some of the concerning reviews I read on various websites. They're pricing was great and they were very responsive before my visit! After my trial, however, I am super disappointed and upset with my experience. I am a low-maintenance bride (or try my best to be) but would not recommend booking them for wedding hair services. I WOULD recommend them for makeup services. When I arrived, no one greeted me for 5-10 minutes AND no one was wearing masks. They're busy, no big deal, though I was a little taken aback by the lack of masks. When someone did greet me, they confirmed my appointment time and sat me down in a chair to start on my hair. The hair stylist (seemed to be the co-owner of the salon) did not ask my name or introduce herself (I still do not know her name) but did ask what style I wanted and asked to see pictures. After that exchange, it all went downhill. She asked one of the younger girls to come over and curl my hair, which she did in less than 10 minutes. That alone should tell you the lack of care taken, as I have long, past should-length hair and it takes me 20+ minutes to curl my hair neatly at home. The curls were there, but messy, and the longer I looked at them in the mirror the less happy I was with them. I had nothing else to do but stare in the mirror, because the girl curling my hair never acknowledged me and instead carried on a conversation with everyone else in the salon except me. It felt very impersonal and I was kind of bummed. I do not expect to feel like a princess, but even a "so when is your wedding? Are you excited?" kind of question would have made me feel welcomed and supported. After the flash curling session, the main stylist came back over and finished my hair style (a simple cross hatch with a small bump in the back). Yet again, she did not introduce herself or attempt to talk to me at all. Instead, she was actively filling out a loan application for some large piece of equipment (yelling answers over my head to someone at the computer) and carrying on a general conversation with other staff and clients. I continued to stare at the mirror, as there was nothing else to do. The results were okay. To her credit she copied the style I wanted, just not very well (see pictures). I'm not sure if the results were due to lack of experience or lack of care. Again, I'm not a perfectionist, but the entire experience left me feeling like I was a mannequin head and not a person, plus that they clearly didn't care whether they got my business or not. My makeup experience was entirely different. The makeup artist was super sweet, asked me questions, chatted with me, and made me feel much better about my time at the salon. She also wore a mask during my entire makeup application. I would have hired them for makeup services but wanted to go with a full-service vendor, and I refuse to hire them for hair services after my experience. If this is how they treat customers before we sign the contract, I can't imagine how they would treat me afterwards. I ultimately decided I wanted a more caring energy on my wedding day.

My daughter was getting married in the Round Hill area and found SAS Salon to do her makeup and style her hair, as well as mine and her teenage daughter's. There were 3 people working on us at different times and one would do hair while the other got makeup, etc. The lady doing the makeup seemed to be the shop owner/manager with 2 younger girls styling our hair. Because there were 3 of us, our appointment lasted around 3 hours. Our makeup turned out well and my daughters hair, the bride to be, was beautiful. My hair ended up just ok. A little too "Jersey" for my taste and my granddaughters just fair. I decided I would pay the almost $600 instead of my daughter, who had made the appointment. Unfortunately, there was an extreme lack of professionalism among the girls styling our hair that didn't seem to bother the manager. They continually gossiped, laughed at and about their friends and talked about various offensive sexual encounters and so on. We were all extremely uncomfortable during the the whole 3 hour appointment. When our appointment was over and we were walking back to our car we all said, "What was that all about?!" We couldn't believe how tacky, unprofessional, unsuitable and bad-form the whole appointment was. When my 17 yr. old granddaughter says, "Wow, that was really ugly!", you know it's bad. The makeup was good. The hair so so. The atmosphere in the salon...extremely toxic.

Steph and team are amazing. Steph herself is a unique combo of scientist and artist, in my opinion and experience: she understands the "tech" of what she's doing (chemicals, etc. for color, for example), and has a true artist's eye when selecting treatments, shaping & styling...pulling everything together. She's made me look 110% better, while helping me appear more natural and "fresh" than I have in years. She's open, interesting and fun, plus actually helped me - new to the area - with referals to other professionals. Rest of staff is great too, and with Steph they're always focused on getting the best results for their clients (or at least this one, and I don't have much for them to work with...:)).

I found SAS salon in 2014 after going to several not so good salons in the area and have been ever since! I've only ever had great hair cuts here and this includes "the big chop" for a hair donation. Everyone I've come across here seems nice enough. The stylists like to gossip amongst themselves, but that never bothers me. If you're looking for calm and spa-like, this isn't for you, but if you want great hair, this is definitely the place!

I started going to SAS about a year ago in preparation for my wedding. I had been to other salons in Winchester, then after a while I just wasn't happy with my hair. I have dark brown hair naturally, but have been blonde for some time now. I needed to make sure that I loved my hair for my wedding so I started a new search for my go-to salon. I ended up having my hair and makeup done on my wedding day in October by Stephanie and her sister (who is the makeup artist) and received so many compliments! Stephanie L is my stylist at SAS and I absolutely LOVE HER! Not only is she fantastic at doing hair, but she always manages to keep me entertained while I'm there. She is a hard working mother, who is extremely driven. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for her salon.
