Tru Salon in St James, NY

The quality of the hair design artists at Tru Salon rival those at some of the finest salons in NYC, without the commute and the attitude, and WITH the added benefits of a warm, welcoming and laid-back vibe. Having lived in NYC for many years and eventually having sought a salon on the island, I can say that I've never been a fan of salons, no matter the location - due primarily to the overall obnoxious and (intentional?) intimidating vibe that seems to be an integral aspect of the business. However, you will feel the polar opposite of any sort of negative energy at TRU, with an uplifting sense of optimism from the moment that you enter, lasting throughout your entire visit. With every person that you encounter, you'll sense that you are truly welcome, and appreciated, as well, to be giving them your business. TRU exemplifies excellence in every way - the salon keeps up with the latest techniques, not just the styles-du-jour, and this is key. The artists are consistent with their skills while also remaining on the cutting edge, no pun...they don't simply rest on their laurels. This is essential. Look at is this way - the best jazz musicians and rock artists are those who have been classically trained, who have impeccable skills in the basics. From that level of perfection, that leaping off point, a true artisan can go anywhere, free-forming to create any genre of art. The same holds true for the hair artist, designing whatever is called for by a client and creator, a true (TRU?) collaboration. But without that base level of excellence, there will always be the risk of dissatisfaction from visit-to-visit. That's why so many of us are averse to haircuts, as the stylist so often lacks classical training and the necessary ongoing awareness as to the evolutionary nature of the craft. However, the proprietor of TRU clearly considers apprenticeship and stellar training to be a priority - it's an integral aspect that's seamlessly woven into the vibe of the salon. I love observing some of the more junior stylists (and senior stylists, too, who may be curious as to a fellow artist's work on any given day) coming over to observe a cut that's underway. The seasoned pros at the shop remain open to what's going on "out there" as well as inside their own four walls, and as they continue to evolve they mentor the up & coming artists that come onboard. This says so much about the integrity of the shop as well as the hair designers who are all committed to unparalleled excellence as they apply their craft. Many thanks all around! Respect. P.S., I'm not mentioning the name of "my" stylist, as they are ALL incredible. (I know this to be the case because I have had the pleasure of booking with a number of different stylists when my usual person is not available, and I've always been delighted with the results.) However, the main reason that I'm not revealing the name of "my" person that I regularly book, the one who "knows" my hair, is that this person is not always available since my crazy schedule is all over the place (and as a result I rarely book far in advance). That said, there's no WAY that I am going to make it more difficult for me to nab an appointment with my fav artist...sorry folks. But I assure you that each and every designer at TRU will do an awesome job in creating and maintaining your look!

I recently came across Tru after moving to St. James from NYC. I have found my new hair home. I absolutely love this salon, everyone is so nice here and my hair looks great!

I was so nervous about cutting my hair. I did what most of us do...I went online for weeks looking for the perfect place and I found it! I'm so happy with the whole experience. Easy to book an appointment, I love the text reminders and the friendly team. As for my hairdresser, I expressed my concerns about my hair and he made me feel very at peace with the process, found it to be very educational too as he explained all the things and tools he would be using, and how they would be beneficial my hair in accordance with my needs and expectations. Needless to say I my hair! Exactly what I wanted and now looking forward to the next step in a few weeks with coloring it. Thank you so much for an amazing experience and results, my hair perfect

Tru is a beautiful and upscale salon with a very hip vibe as if to walk into a Brooklyn scene with your girlfriends to chat. I have been to lots (And I Mean Lots) of salons all over LI and Brian and his team never disappoint. Courtney is an amazing Colorist as is Carli or Michelle and Brian, Casey, Gloria or Chris are amazing stylists!! I am always inspired by someone's "look"and leaving Tru always makes me never want to wash my hair again!! They always satisfy this Brooklyn girls hair!
