Illusions Salon and Day Spa in Williamsburg, VA

I look forward to my appointments at Illusions by Marcus. From the moment I come through the door, everyone I encounter is friendly and personable and eager to be helpful. My hair is straight and fine, with a nightmare of cowlicks taking it in multiple directions, and I want it to be both attractive and easy to maintain. In the various cities and towns I have lived in, I have found just a couple of people who could provide that. Marcus is one of those people. On my first visit, he took the time to really understand my hair and my needs, and he gave me a great cut on his first try -- and every time since then.

I've been coming here for over a year now after going to 2 separate Salons, one in Williamsburg and one in Gloucester. I really love Illusions by Marcus for several reasons, first because Lara does a great job on my hair. I'm very happy with the color,cut and attentiveness she devotes to my hair. She'll tell me what she thinks and then let's me make the decision and she listens. I appreciate that; I'm no expert on hair color or cut. I also think their prices are competitive for what you get. It's always a great atmosphere there with the employees and that speaks volumes. A friend recommended Lara to me and I would definitely recommend her or any of the other stylists there, everyone I see coming in looks 100 times better when they leave.

This place definitely caters to older adult women. And if you have curly hair, it's not the place for you. I brought my son, because he has curly hair and we have trouble with barbers who want to give all boys the same cut. Usually a salon will give a more personalized cut, but woman was about to do the barber thing: get out the trimmer and shave right up the sides. I stopper her in time, but seriously, is it too much to ask for a scissor cut? This was curly hair nono number one. She only grudgingly wet his hair for the cut, asked me if I wanted a tapered cut, to which I replied "no" long on top short on the sides -- not tapered. She proceeded to give a tapered cut, and then just to make sure he looked like a televangelist, blow dried his curly hair and combed it straight! Uggh. After I got him home and wet it, I was able to get some of the poofiness out. Now he looks like Hugh Grant from the 1990s. I'm wavering between waiting until it grows out and finding a place that can fix it.
